Hi Denise,
Firstly let me say we are sorry to hear that Toby went on to require surgery after his visit to us, but we would like to raise a few points to justify the treatment that Toby received at our clinic.
We squeezed Toby in for a Vet assessment between consultations as we were fully booked but you had advised he had eaten multiple foreign bodies (tampons) that day and had vomited two up at home before presentation. He was found to be bright and happy and not showing signs of distress on admission. We administered medication to make him vomit and he brought up one more of the items which you described in his ingesta.
When the Vet discharged him to you, she was then advised by you that Toby may have eaten the items the previous day, at which time our Veterinarian advised you that, based on that timeline, there was a potential for one of the tampons to have passed into his intestines, and if he started to show any symptoms relating to this, he would require an urgent recheck and surgery to remove them.
It is our understanding that after your visit, Toby did start to show symptoms suggesting he had an intestinal blockage and then required surgery to remove a further tampon from his bowel. Surgery to remove an obstruction such as this would have been costly regardless of when it was performed (and would not have been undertaken in a dog currently not showing symptoms of an issue).
We are sorry that you have had to go through this experience with Toby, especially for a third time (you advised us that he had had two prior surgeries for foreign body ingestions), and I’m sure you are feeling frustrated both from an emotional and financial point of view, but I feel that your review of our services is unjustified. We went out of our way to accommodate you when your regular Vet could not see you and gave you appropriate advice on what would need to be done if Toby did deteriorate.
