I was truly blown away by our visit to Margan Wines & Restaurant. I visited over Christmas with my husband and parents and we booked the Ultimate Margan Experience. Such a unique experience to taste wines while standing in front of the grapes from which they derived, as well as touring the farm and learning about their sustainable/organic approach to farming and winemaking. Followed of course by a 5-course lunch which was delicious (ask for a 2nd serving of the bread, you won’t regret it…). We felt there was SO much value in the experience and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the region. Special thanks to our guide Steve for his knowledge and hospitality, as well as all the restaurant/cellar door staff for their friendly service.

We enjoyed a lovely five course lunch at Margan. We booked our Dining Experience online, experienced friendly service, and exceptional local food and wine. We’d recommend a wander through the kitchen garden and taking your time when exploring Broke and the Hunter Valley.

My partner and I went on the margan experience tour yesterday and had a wonderful day.
From the very first phone call informing Margan that we were going to be late, the staff were very warm and friendly. Once we arrived, we were welcomed into the cellar door with glasses of wine in hand. We then entered the tour with Steve who was very knowledgeable, entertaining and informative; teaching about Margans innovative, sustainable farming and wine production and how they repurpose so many of their wastes. The tour was fun and engaging. Then we were taken into the dining room for a 5 course degustation which was made of fresh, locally grown seasonal produce from their garden. Everything from the breads, butters, pickles and sauces were made in house and the meals were delicious, simple and fresh. The staff were attentive and informative. The pace of the meal was spot on, the chairs were comfortable and the views were beautiful.
Overall a great day with reasonable prices and a lovely experience.

On the drive along Tourist Drive 33 in Hunter Valley, visited Margan on Broke. Pleasantly surprised by the warm environment and excellent service by the staff. We had a varietal of meat and cheese for tea, and tasted a good selection of the estate’s wines.

We had the most amazing 5 course degustation with paired wines on Saturday night as a birthday treat. The food was so creative, and absolutely delicious and the wine matched perfectly. Absolutely exquisite degustation meal. Perfectly prepared, Margan home grown garden sourced and chef inspired and prepared in the restaurant kitchen, delicious and fresh. The serves were ‘small’ but perfect and every mouthful was sublime. It was so satisfying to know all of the food was sourced right on site.

A lovely afternoon of wining and dining. Impeccable quality service, friendly and attentive staff, very informative wine making intro tour and a first class culinary experience from their garden to your plate. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would go back and recommend to everyone wanting an authentic Hunter valley experience in a family run not overly commercial atmosphere. After our beautiful lunch we sat outside under a tree on their lounge and just took in the view with Broke mountain for a backdrop. It was my first time in the Hunter valley and was probably one of the highlights!

We throughly enjoyed a garden to fork long lunch 1st Oct. I think our waiters name was Wesley, who was a highlight of our dining experience. Everything, wine, food, atmosphere, service was top notch 5/5. We also walked away with a couple of bottles which matched our experience. Sadly the Mourvèdre was not available for us to take home. Our Margan degustation experience was, unfortunately, disappointing. The service was good and the environment was nice but the food left a lot to be desired, esp. considering the price. The first couse was crumbled cheese, raw grated cabbage, and bog-standard dukkah sprinkled on top. There seemed to be no dressing of any kind, at least that we could taste. If you love plain raw cabbage and even plainer cheese, then you’re in for a treat. As part of a fine dining degustation menu, however, it was lack lustre to say the least. The second course wasn’t much better: a parfait that tasted more like plain tofu, unfortunately. Then we had spanner crab which was soft and mushy and quite unpleasant. Finally, the fourth course brought some good news: the meat course was nicely cooked. And dessert was nice enough, but our attention had faded at this point.
These days, there seems to be a rash of restaurants serving fancified food that looks more complex than it tastes. The dreaded overcomplicated and underwhelming degustation menu! If restaurants like Margan were to simply make good food with great ingredients – and their beautiful organic ingredients are great – the experience would be much better overall. It’s a lost opportunity.
Finally, before going to Margan, we read a Google review that noted the need to make sure that your receipt was accurate. And lucky we did. They’d changed us for a $55 bottle of wine we didn’t order or drink. Mind your receipt when you get to the end of the meal.
I really wanted to love Margan because they’re a family business using biodynamic ingredients. While their wine was good, the meal was disappointing. Can’t recommend and won’t return.

We have had multiple long lunches at this venue- the outdoor seating has a lovely set up, the wine, decor and grounds are great. Small portions but fine food. Service slow and coupled with the fact that the last few times we realised later that we were charged for items we didn’t order (appreciate our family is large, but it has happened more than once & the menu isn’t cheap) & then have found it difficult to chase down a refund.. certainly would return to buy wine, sadly not sure about giving it another chance for lunch.

Fabulous wine tasting experience, our third in the last 10 months. It was well worth returning, and to also taste new vintages. Mitch was an absolute delight and funny, making our visit so enjoyable. So many great wines and range of grapes to choose from. Was hard to decide what we were going to fill the car boot with. Thank you again Mitch!
