The Australian Charities and Not-For-Profit Commission states that Lort Smiths summary of activities are as follows:
    https://www.acnc.gov.au/charity/charities/fc4d4158-38af-e811-a963-000d3ad24077/profile
MOST OF THE REVIEWS ON GOOGLE AND OTHER REVIEW SITES WOULD SUGGEST THAT THATS NOT TRUE. Most expensive and unsupportive not-for-profit that I’ve ever seen.

If you love your animal, don’t take them here.
Significantly higher prices than every other vet that I contacted, no continuity of care, rushing so much that they don’t record proper medical or incident history, new vets each day (sometimes multiple each day), each vet gave a different account and had a different understanding as to why my animal was brought in, information and advice differed between every vet I was forced to see and speak to, multiple vets tried to force unnecessary, excessive and expensive procedures, no one is ever available to speak to you when you call and no one ever calls you back. Repeated requests for management intervention were ignored and when I did get to speak with the new director, she misrepresented what occurred, wasn’t interested in available evidence and then refused to engage further after making multiple admissions in writing.

My animal was near death because of the “care” of Lort Smith staff. My animal was repeatedly dosed with Buprenorphine without consent and sedated without consent after they were told NOT TO TREAT MY ANIMAL ANY FURTHER, not to touch her and knew I was taking my animal to an alternate vet and then management lied again about the sedation I was already advised had occurred.

An extensive complaint has been lodged with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria and I hope this serves as a warning to anyone thinking of having their animal treated there.

In my opinion, it’s not a safe place to take your animal and I will never make the same mistake again!

    PLEASE FIND ANOTHER VET!

We went to this vet for many years but their conduct in recent years has been appalling.

Constant advice to undertake unnecessary and excessive procedures, incomplete treatments, consents not sought, failure to advise of medical conditions and treatments, inadequate updates, repeated advice to euthanise and theres virtually no accountability for the conduct of staff at this practise.

No one will take complaints, no one ever calls you back, they wont provide requested information and the new director seems to turn a blind eye to whats going on there.

I was also told they weren’t concerned about complaints made to the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board because the current president of the board is a former director of Lort Smith, North Melbourne.

YOUR ANIMALS ARE TOO IMPORTANT, PLEASE JUST FIND ANOTHER VET!

    Communication is virtually non existent.
Attempted to charge almost $1000 for testing for a condition that had already been confirmed with ultrasound and couldn’t be treated due to comorbidities anyway.
Animal lost over 1 kg of weight in their “care” and was repeatedly loaded up with opioids without advice or consent (I allege to keep her quiet), then advising that she was in pain for days despite no record of pain ever existing and staff specifically advising she had experienced no pain.
Hadn’t advised about a condition that was known to them from last year, found out by chance in a conversation with the vet.
Vets constantly change and no one takes ownership of your animal, it’s condition, tests or results, in fact one of the Vets Dr Ratnayake didn’t even know what my dog was there for when speaking to me, nor did she know the sex of my animal, lies about administering drugs and looks to have continued working on my animal after I was assured my animal would be removed from her care.
I consider this practice to be extremely dangerous and unethical and anyone with issues similar to this needs to lodge formal complaints with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria.
    https://www.vetboard.vic.gov.au/VPRBV/VPRBV/Complaints.aspx?hkey=a03d1895-4bd9-46f0-9d35-f80def80ca9b
I’ve had my animal for almost 16 years and I’ve never experienced such deception, lies, dismal communication, threats of RSPCA involvement etc.
I had to threaten to call the police in order to have my animal released to take her to a reputable Vet.
MY RECOMMENDATION AND ADVICE WOULD BE TO NEVER USE THIS SERVICE IF YOU LOVE YOUR ANIMAL!

Terrible do not trust your pets with them. Apart from getting 3 different appointment times, booked to drop off Pur cat with a nurse only to have to wait to see a vet 1hr after supposed time. They discharged our 15yr old cat to us still out of it but we’re told he was Ok. He actually died in our car. They admitted “procedures” will change at their end gave me condolences over the phone and refunded our deposit after 2 weeks. We have had no apology in writing what so ever. I will be angry with them for a very long time. This wouldn’t have happened to a human why oh why did they discharge a 15yr old cat not out of anaesthetic!!!???!!! Disgusting!

Rude reception staffs and below par medical treatments!

Also my dog got an unnecessary procedure done (a skin biopsy), when I arrived home I saw my dog bleeding everywhere on the car seat, in the house, on the pathway. I had to rushed back to the hospital to get her stitches fixed.

It turned out that 1 of the blood vessel was nicked during the procedure. RECKLESS!

NO APOLOGY OR REMORSE from the staffs…

I have since brought my dog to a specialist that told us that the biopsy is UNNECESSARY and my dog has a skin allergy. She needs an allegy test not skin biopsy.

Just some money making schemes they are doing there. Please do not waste your time and money.

Only thing good about this place was the lovely ladies in the waiting area who greeted me and comforted me during my visit, receptionist staff were rude and vets tried to keep my dog there for as long as they could to get more money for me, repeatedly suggesting he stay over night for “observation” when he was clearly able to come home as they had said earlier he was “completely fine”.
Not to mention I witnessed a vet drop a dog on the ground and scream at it because the dog peed on her a little.
    Will not be going again

Had the most wonderful experience seeing Tristan in emergency regarding our cat Sebastian’s recent FLUTD diagnosis. Tristan is empathetic, knowledgeable, highly skilled, realistic and an excellent communicator – everything you would hope for when your loved one is suffering.

I am giving 5 stars for Tristan, the nurses and the receptionists who I found to be extremely friendly despite the obvious high workload and stressful environment of Lort Smith (and most business post covid age) at the moment.

Unfortunately I have had a hostile experience with the vet Amy who I would not recommend for cats with FLUTD. She is very rushed, resentful and lacks the patience, passion and curiosity to help cats with long-term ailments.

After multiple experiences of her being rude and the last pointless visit where I paid $200 to be talked at about feliway instead of logical next steps in his treatment such as medication clarifications, diet, urine and blood testing – I explained that I could not take Sebastian to her anymore with her attitude towards me, and that although she said I should come in for emergency that it was obvious he just needed to see a regular vet for visits now for ongoing treatment. The last visit she had insisted I bring him in emergency.

This resulted in a very colourful voice message from her where she poetically and vindictively had to have the last word.

Cats with FLUID require cooperation from the owner and the vet as a team to slowly and patiently discover the optimal conditions to improve the cats stresses. I had hoped to go on that journey with Lort Smith and did so with complete respect and trust and also reasonable expectations under the current stressors. Amy I wish you would have put your prejudices aside and focused on the animal.

I was taking my cats to Lort smith since moving around the corner, but I really regret it now. My cat was very unwell, we told them everything they needed to know and they didn’t put the pieces together. We had him admitted overnight and paid thousands for his care, also with Covid restrictions, I wasn’t allowed in while they tried to take samples and check him out. I could hear his cries from the waiting room. He came out with the same treatment plan that didn’t work and trauma.
He never used to hiss or growl at the vets, always came out of his cage with no fuss. Now no matter which vet he goes to, he doesn’t trust them. I don’t know what the staff did to my little boy but he doesn’t trust any vets at any clinics thanks to the treatment received at Lort smith.

Do not take your animals to Lort smith, I didn’t heed that warning and I feel terrible about it every day. My cat suffered way longer than he had to, I paid so much money for poor treatment and care, and my poor boy has trauma now.

I called Lort Smith trying to book an appointment to see my puppy as she has broken her leg, they have advised me to come as soon as possible so a VET can see her. I followed their advice and took her in. Once I got there the tool my puppy at the back I waited for 3 hrs. Finally they called me to be seen to let me know that the Vet doc has left for the day and the dog will stay to be there overnight. ( well if you would have taken me in when I reach the hospital my puppy would have been seen by a VET)… after leaving the puppy there they call me in the morning saying they did the X-ray for the dog but though three VETs has seen the X-ray they could not tell if is broken or fractured. So they sent he home over the weekend. Trying to book an appointment now to be seen by a specialist and they can only book during working hours. When I first called them they said I need to come in to discuss payment. I paid everything on the spot and yet they were not helpful…
The Vet in Campbellfield were very lovely last time the one in North MElbourne even when I was there they were very rude.
I do not recommend this place

I took my cat for a dental appointment that had been booked for over a month, when I got there they informed me that I needed to pay a 50% deposit ($500) before they’d see him. No one had told me I’d need to pay that much up front. I didn’t have that much money to put down, I was told before I made the appointment that there were payment plans available. I tried to explain that I’d been off work for 3 weeks because I had been COVID positive, but they just didn’t care, they only care about money. I’m just shocked at how heartless these people can be.

A downside? Because they’re under resourced, it’s nearly impossible to contact them on the phone. If you have a query re your pet’s treatment the phone usually rings out, so you may need to physically go in for a consult.

I brought my cat here during an emergency situation after being quoted $5-7k for treatment at another animal hospital. The receptionist I believe her name with Tae is so kind and empathetic, she took time to explain my options regarding cost and I also saw her dealing with other customers in such a genuine, respectful way. She is an asset to the organization. My cat stayed in overnight and I received an SMS update which was appreciated. The discharge instructions were very thorough and clear, I was provided a detailed write up on his condition and what care was required at home, as well as instructions on medication. Due to the urgency they saw him immediately, and when I picked him up today it only took around 20 minutes to be seen by a nurse and have him returned to me. It is still touch and go with my cats situation but I will bring him back here with no hesitation if the need arises.

Im on the fence with my rating. My pet dog went in there with kidney issues on a Friday afternoon / night.

We discussed a plan of action but ultimately had to wait till Tuesday (PH on the Mon) to get an ultrasound.

The doctor gave me a call on Sat evening to discuss his situation … which was not going well.

Sunday morning the doctor (7am) rang me & partner … twice to update us. Unfortunately our phones were on silent and we were dealing with the kids (4&5yo). They did leave a message and for me to contact them immediately.

It was good & professional up until this point, where they
    1) Did not leave a number for me to return a call
    2) When I rang the normal number, I was diverted to a message advising I had rang out of hours.

So my plan was to call them back 8:30ish when someone was at reception. At 7:55am they called back advising my dog was in a very bad situation and was about to pass. They asked me to come in immediately. The kids being kids were not ready yet so I had to go alone and do a video call. Half way there I got a call from Lort Smith advising my dog had passed away.

If I had a number to call back originally I would have understood the circumstances and stood a better chance to see my dog one last time. Dying alone in an unfamiliar environment when it could have been prevented was the hardest part.

On top of this when I questioned them about it (the second time) they brushed it off advising that is how the phone system is setup, which it might be, but someone called me from a communication device ?

Anyway the way the ending was handled is what leaves a sour taste in my mouth thinking that I could have said goodbye to him had someone left a number to call back on.

Unfortunately after running tests (very quickly) our boy had a heartbreaking diagnosis. The discharge nurse was absolutely incredible. She was so compassionate and patient with us. She answered all our questions and provided amazing guidance. We never felt rushed talking with her. Eventually we sadly had to bring our beautiful cat in to be put to sleep. Again, Lort Smith showed amazing support though an awful time and even sent us a handwritten card in the mail after his passing. We would like to appreciate the male veterinarian with blond, shoulder-lengthed hair at the evening emergency department/team, who was professional and compassionate throughout the whole consultation. Although our little budgie passed away at the end, the vet had ensured that he was given the best veterinary care before he passed way peacefully. The nurse who held the inital consult was also polite and we were impressed by their kind manner.

The receptionists were okay, not considered as rude but not particularly polite either – but I believe they were busy at all time, so my only comment was that the manners could be slightly improved there. The waiting time for the landline and reception was also long, but again understandable given Lort Smith is a busy animal hospital.

In overall, I would recommand this hospital to everyone, based on my personal experience.

I had a bad experiment in Lorthsmith today. I am a very easy person who will never give any bad review for any service before but was getting so disappointed about the Staff here.
My dog in a very urgent situation that need to be cared. I brought her to the Vet in the morning and they told us that our puppy need to be treated as soon as possible in the hospital as he is in very bad status , so the Vet send me address and also help us to call to LorthSmith hospital for an appointment.
We came there at 12pmand meet the reception at 12:20. Due to the COVID19 so we have to wait outside in our car and waiting for the call from them. We are very happy to wait as we understand it is busy at that moment.
Yes. When we waited for 1 hour i came and ask staff there how long it will be as my dog seems painful that time. And they said they will notice and come to us soon. Also, at 1:39pm the staff call us and said they will be there soon, we waited for 30Mins and another 1 hour, no one come to us. Me and my partner come to the staff and ask them again as we know our dog is really painful at that time. But she was just very RUDE to us. It the lady who have a hair tight. She looks at us by a very RUDE way.
But we still very patiently waited untill 3:30 . Still no one care about us. I came inside and asked the staff (different lady), at the moment my dog was crying in the car as he is so painful. I asked her again, and like begging her to help, and she told us our appointment was being moved to late as some another cases. WHATT?? Really???
And finally at 4:10, when i have to brought my dog in front of door, someone came to us to help.
And after 4 hours waiting there. And another 10mins waiting for doctor to check my dog. They send him again to Specialist as they cannot do anything. It means we wasted our 4 hours for nothing.
And again . After bring my dog to Specialist Vet, they doing Xray and checking my dog. And my dog at this time was really bad and cannot be treated.
    He got EUTHANASIA !!
Now i will never see my dog again.
I am not blaming on you for our lost of dog. But I think you really need to care more about your service. Please dont ignore any case. If your staff seeing any long waiting, please inform us that it will be long. Dont let us wait for NOTHING.
We see people came after us and gone before us.
I know you will delete my review. But I really need you to know how upset we were. Please be in our point and think. Dont excuse it all happened because of the busy time. It just because you are not professional enough.
    Thank you.

Greedy people that is all what they are Greedy.
Our dog had an accident, because the covid 19 We have been very short of money, my wife is not working and I only have a part time work.
We live in Pakenham and the vet clinics are pretty dear around here, my wife rang this venue asking for prices , they told her they could not give her any prices without seeing the dog.
She took the risk to drive to this place in the city.
After the consultation and the mocking about by the vet, they come back with a price 3 times more expensive that here in Pakenham.
We could not believe, they told her previously, that they will take her connection card.
    Guess what! all lies.
Any way they where not going to help her at all, even the dog needed urgent attention.
People like this ones don not deserve any respect, the Dog is a patient and Us the owners need it some help.
We will never forget how bad you treated us.

Tristan was amazing! I went to see him for my fish, whom I love very much. He treated by little guy the same as if I visited with a dog, a cat, or any other pet. He gave real-life options and was up-front about the outcomes. Would recommend visiting

Extremely dissatisfied with the service and the operation of this facility. Do NOT recommend if your pet is undergoing any serious surgery. Unprofessional conduct. Disgusted. Not only is my dog still suffering from an infection post surgery that they failed to diagnosed and treat properly after 5 visits within the space of 3 weeks, they FAILED to remove the needle from the dip out of my dogs legs (my surprise when I discovered this once I had arrived home).

Very rude service over the phone. I’m fostering cats and the foster organisation that I am with partners with them, I was asked to book an appointment with them from my case manager to check the two cats that we have fostered as we do not have any information on their past and I was greeted very rudely by a staff member. Aggressive on the phone and did not listen to what I said. I understand that there is a pandemic and so they are not taking non emergencies but I was not notified before hand and not till the end of the call. Very dissapointed

Terrible experience. Myself and my partner called to book an appointment for adopting an apartment cat.

Once there, we saw a cat we really liked.

However, when we said we wanted to adopt it, we were confronted with extremely personal questions, like where we were from, if we were living together and if we were renting.

We took the questions in because we really liked the cat, but they refused us to take it even after 20min of questioning.

    Extremely bizarre experience.

The receptionist had an extremely rude attitude. I will NEVER go back again!

I took my kitten for vaccination, but as soon as I arrived, I was told my appointment was cancelled. The receptionist insisted she left a voice message to my phone, but I DIDN’T get any. NO text and NO email, either. She didn’t care if I receive the message or not and replied to me with very rude manner. She even told her manager that I got the voice message and rolled her eyes when I was talking to the manager. EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL, and I’ll NEVER visit here again.
