I cannot let this vile attack on my business and professional self pass without a response. The allegations are false and or contrived and are typical of someone well practiced in the art of online bullying. These disgusting online attacks are a large part of the reason vets are leaving the industry in droves. It also contributes to why our industry has the highest suicide rate of any profession in the country. My staff have been working tirelessly over the past 2 years to service an industry that has grown by over 20% and has been beset by the same staff shortages seen everywhere. I have never experienced such unrelenting pressure in almost 40 years of practice.
Let’s look at the facts. Yes, I was late for the visit, but my staff were in communication with Ms Hill on a number of occasions to let her know I was held up and the message I received was that she was home all afternoon and “just get here when you can”. When I arrived, I was ushered in by a gentleman who was quiet and respectful. Ms Hill then appeared and proceeded to give me a torrent of abuse about being late. The vitriol was so severe that I came very close to leaving immediately. The only reason I didn’t was that I was there for her dog and not for Ms Hill. Had the attending vet been one of my junior colleagues then I shudder to think what impact this would have had.
An apology was certainly given for my lateness. As for being rude I said the bare minimum lest I trigger more abuse. As for “screwing up the injection” everyone who has ever had blood drawn or an intravenous injection knows that veins may be difficult to find first go. Her pet didn’t suffer as I had administered a pain killing sedative before attempting venipuncture for the lethal injection as per normal protocol.
I understand that ending a pet’s life is an emotional time, yet it doesn’t excuse Ms Hill’s inexcusable behaviour on the day nor her attempt at on line trolling some 3 months after the event. I stand by my actions on the day and the actions of my dedicated and hard-working staff. If you stand by this person then yes, do not “go to this vet”, as we would prefer to look after the large numbers of respectful and grateful clients that use our services.
